Heavy rain and possible thunderstorms are set to batter the UK on Saturday, potentially spoiling the plans of tennis and football fans.

The Met Office has issued a yellow thunderstorm warning for much of central England on Saturday, while a similar warning of heavy rain is in place for large swathes of the South West.

It means tennis spectators hoping to attend Wimbledon or football fans planning to congregate in pubs or fan zones for England’s Euro 2020 match against Ukraine could be lashed by the wet weather.

The weather alerts warn that people could see flooding to homes and businesses, delays or cancellations to transport services and a danger that communities may become “cut-off”.

Today

A very unsettled day across most of the UK as early showers and rain in the south spread northwards, becoming heavy and thundery at times. Parts of northern, eastern and southwestern England are likely to see the heaviest rain.

Tonight

Early evening showers and thunderstorms slowly fading away leaving many areas dry later. Still some showery rain over Scotland and the far south of England by dawn though.

Sunday

Warm sunny spells for many areas, but cloudier in coastal parts of eastern Scotland and northeast England. Heavy thundery showers also developing in many regions from late morning.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday

Unsettled in the north with heavy, thundery showers, fine and dry in the south. An area of wet and unseasonably windy weather arrives from the south-west Tuesday. Remaining unsettled Wednesday.
