The Duchess of Sussex had an upset stomach due to suspected food poisoning

Meghan Markle was forced to rush to the bathroom after meeting Princess Eugenie in order to throw up.

Princess Eugenie was the first member of the Royal Family that Meghan was introduced to by Prince Harry and the Duke of Sussex has given an insight into the encounter.

In his autobiography Spare, Prince Harry provides details of the meeting between his cousin and Meghan Markle at Nottingham Cottage.

The Duke of Sussex wrote that the meeting was a success and that: "If meeting the rest of my family goes like this, we're home free."

He added that Meghan and Eugenie got on so well it was "as if they were sisters."

However, Meghan Markle had to excuse herself from the dinner party after complaining of an upset stomach.

Prince Harry stated that Meghan started "violently" throwing up later that evening due to suspected food poisoning.

He added: "She revealed that she'd had squid for lunch at a restaurant. Calamari! Mystery solved."

Princess Eugenie and her husband James Brooksbank are known to have remained close to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry since the couple stepped away from the Royal Family.

In his autobiography, Prince Harry also details the first meeting between Prince William and Meghan Markle.

The Duke of Sussex said his brother "recoiled" from a hug from Meghan Markle.

He wrote: "I introduced Meg, who leaned in and gave him a hug, which completely freaked him out. He recoiled."

Harry added: "Maybe Willy expected Meg to curtsey?

"It would have been protocol when meeting a member of the Royal Family for the first time, but she didn't know and I didn't tell her."

Despite not informing Meghan that it was royal protocol to curtsey when meeting Prince William for the first time, Prince Harry did recommend curtseying when meeting Queen Elizabeth II.
