UK Government plans for allowing British citizenship to be stripped without warning criticised

Government plans to strip people of their British citizenship without warning are “uncivilised” and “legally disputable”, according to a Tory former cabinet minister.

David Davis wanted to amend the Nationality and Borders Bill to remove clause nine, arguing it could put at risk people who have lived in the UK for almost all of their life.

The bill, currently making its way through Parliament, would give the Government significant powers if passed, including the ability to potentially strip someone's citizenship if they have one parent with a foreign passport.

The bill has faced hostility, with Black, Asian or minority ethnic (BAME) background concerned the Government is “coming for them” according to Labour MP Imran Hussain.

The Home Office has stated that those deprived of citizenship will still have a right to appeal.

Boris Johnson said at PMQs last week that the Nationality and Borders Bill “gives us the power to make the distinction at last between illegal and legal migrants to this country, it gives… Border Force the power to turn people back at sea, and it gives us the power to screen people and send them for screening overseas rather than in this country”.
