Tom Cruise broke royal protocol after being seen holding Kate, Duchess of Cambridge's hand at last night’s Top Gun premiere.

The US superstar was seen greeting the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at the red carpet event in Leicester Square.

The royal couple shook hands with Cruise before laughing and sharing smalltalk between themselves.

After the greeting, Cruise offered to hold Kate's hand as they walked up the steps to the premiere.

The offer was accepted by the Duchess, who gave him her hand while walking alongside Prince William.

The actor was not seen bowing to the royal couple, as the traditional royal protocol suggests he should.

According to protocol, Cruise should have instead bowed his head to show respect to the monarchy.

It comes just over a week after William broke royal protocol himself to give an overwhelmed royal fan a big hug.

On a two-day visit to Scotland, the Duke and Duchess were greeted by crowds outside Cambridge.

When seeing an overwhelmed pensioner crying due to meeting him, William gave him a warm embrace.
