Kailia rose to fame on the popular TLC reality show, which followed mothers and their daughters as they competed in beauty pageants.

Her death was confirmed by her mum in an emotional Facebook post on Tuesday: "I don't have words or any thoughts. A beautiful baby girl is gone.

The family also released a statement to TMZ, confirming the cause of the 16-year-old's death.

Kailia Posey was a budding pilot before her passing.

"Although she was an accomplished teenager with a bright future ahead of her, unfortunately in one impetuous moment, she made the rash decision to end her earthly life," it read.

"She won countless crowns and trophies after competing on the pageant circuit her entire life.

"Her highly acclaimed talent as a contortionist had already led to professional touring job offers, and she had recently been selected to be a cheerleader at her high school next fall."

It is understood Kailia was aiming to gain a commercial pilot's licence as she had a passion for aviation.

The star had celebrated her 16th birthday just a week prior to her death.

In response to her passing, her family has created the Kailia Posey Teen Crisis Intervention Fund with the aim of "getting much needed resources to students in crisis".

America's Got Talent star Kadan Bart Rockett added her name to those paying tribute, saying on one of Kailia's Instagram posts from April: "Can’t even believe this has happened. I’m praying for you guys to get through this. She always was so kind to all of us. Rest In Peace."
