The University of New Orleans student was dropped off unresponsive at a hospital, where she was later declared dead

A 21-year-old college student has been declared dead after taking an Uber following a night out with her friends.

The University of New Orleans student was dropped off unresponsive at a hospital, where she was later declared dead.

Ciaya Jordan Whetstone had been at Mardi Gras parades on Friday before attending a bar with her friend, Juliet Orr.

Juliet told the New Orleans Advocate that Ciaya had been driven to her boyfriend's house in the suburbs, before she took an Uber in order to leave and check on her dog.

Roommate Reese Wight said Ciaya described the driver as a "friend" and she was leaving to "go find her car".

Reese says that he "tried to convince her not to go".

Another of Ciaya's friends, Robert Torres, says he called her at around 1.30am and allegedly heard the driver ask her:"Do you like to party?"

Robert told the news outlet that she said that she would call him back.

Reports state that it is unclear who dropped Ciaya off at the hospital.

Police say she arrived in a "private conveyance", a term used when ambulances are not involved.

It remains unclear as to what the cause of her death was.

University of New Orleans officials state Ciaya was a business administration junior who was due to graduate in 2023.

School president John Nicklow said in a statement: “As a University, few things are more challenging than dealing with the sadness of the death of a student. Our thoughts are with Ciaya’s family and friends.

“We are offering counselling services to students and employees who need support."
