The latest cinematic team up between Marvel Studios and Sony’s Columbia pictures is set to overtake James Bond at the cinematic box office, as No Way Home enjoyed a gigantic opening weekend.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is the third film to feature British actor Tom Holland as the masked web-slinger, has reported generated global ticket sales worth over £445m ($587m).
Industry figures suggest the comic book film should comfortably overtake Daniel Craig’s final outing as 007, as the biggest English-language film of the year. Bond achieved ticket sales of $774m globally after opening in September, Spider-Man could surpass this by as early as the Christmas weekend.
Already the top film in North America, Spider-Man raked in over $260m in the US compared to Bond’s $161m.
The Spider-Man premiere appears to show that cinema goers are setting aside fears over Covid-19 with what could be the third-biggest cinema debut in history.
The film has yet to open in China, the world’s biggest cinema market, which means it really could be time to die for Bond’s post-pandemic records.
After all the feverish online speculation and hype, fans braced for disappointment from Tom Holland’s third tour of duty as the web-slinging superhero are going to be disappointed because Spider-Man: No Way Home is a thrillingly wild ride.
A breathless chase between Peter Parker and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Dr Strange through the spirals of a Mirror Dimension that recalls the folding cityscapes of Christopher Nolan’s Inception is another adrenaline rush, and a showdown at the Statue of Liberty flexes the digital effects team’s abilities to render brutal combat in mid-air and on tumbling scaffolding.
Spider-Man: No Way Home puts the characters – and in turn fans – through the emotional wringer to underline the great responsibility that comes with great power.
