The ex-wife of Prince Andrew said she "carried the guilt" of her mum leaving for years

Sarah Ferguson has revealed she thought her mum had left home because she had a “bad haircut”.

The Duchess of York said she blamed herself when her mum Susan Barrantes left back in 1972.

She said: “I’d just had my hair cut really badly, then mum left and went to live in Argentina.

“So from the age of 12, I felt she left me because she didn’t like my haircut and she was so disappointed she couldn’t look at it.

“I felt that it was all my fault that dad had been left on his own to raise my sister and I.

“I carried that guilt for years.”

Ms Barrantes, who had left her husband for a polo player, died in a car crash in 1998 aged 62.

Ms Ferguson added to the Metro: “She was the same age as I am now when she died, so I make sure I live every minute of my life to the full.”

Prince Andrew's ex-wife has previously spoken out about her struggles with an eating disorder growing up.

And she's admitted that she's always felt judged by others.

She continued: “I’ve always felt judged, which is why I support the LGBTQ+ community.

“I know what it’s like to be segregated.

“I’m 62 now and it still hurts, even now, when someone has a pop at me."
