The strikes have caused severe disruption on the London Underground this week

Sadiq Khan was booed at the NME Awards last night over Tube strikes that have caused severe disruption on the London Underground.

This week commuters were advised to work from home as mass walk-outs from Transport for London workers protesting jobs, pensions and conditions have taken place on Tuesday March 1 and Thursday March 3.

Walking up on stage at London’s Brixton Academy to present the Best Solo Act From the UK award, the London Mayor was met by overwhelming boos from the crowd.

To make light of the situation, his co-presenter joked with the audience saying Mr Khan’s poor reception was due to the London congestion charge.

Mr Khan took the chance to further criticise Prime Minister Boris Johnson for the Christmas parties that took place in Downing Street over lockdown. He joked: “This is how you have a safe and legal party.”

One attendee took to Twitter to write: “Nice to completely miss the mark and have @SadiqKhan at the @NME awards f***ing around and trying to take the p*** out of Boris Johnson’s party at a party, when he could be sorting out the Tube strike mess. Instead people who have to work in the morning get screwed over by strike.”

Another audience the member described the event as ‘painful’ while saying: “Best part was when Sadiq Khan got huge boos.”

Punk grime group Bob Vylan who were also presenting an award used their time on stage to call out the London Mayor saying: “Sadiq Khan is in the house you know?

“Sadiq you need to sort these trains out. Do you understand? You have to keep this city moving bro because people need to get to work you understand? Come on we’ve gotta do better.”

Big winners at the awards were artists Sam Fender and Griff who took home

Two awards each as well as American singer Halsey who accepted this year's innovation award with a pre-recorded message.
