The Royal Navy used superglue to repair a nuclear reactor, with an urgent investigation being ordered into the matter.

Maintenance workers used the glue to fix a damaged nuclear reactor on a Trident submarine while it was dry docking for a refurbishment and refuel at HMNB Devonport in Plymouth.

The submarine carries Trident ballistic missiles and is one of four nuclear powered nuclear submarines.

It was discovered by engineers while they were preparing to set the reactor to full power.

The submarine was commissioned in 1993 and began receiving maintenance work in 2015.

The 150 metre long submarine’s repair costs have gone over budget by £300million.

Workers are accused of supergluing bolt heads back on instead of properly replacing them.

A procedural glitch was reported but the superglue was not mentioned.

A Royal Navy source shares their outrage at finding out about the oversight, calling it a “disgrace".

"You can’t cut corners with nuclear,” the source told The Sun.

“Standards are standards. Nuclear standards are never compromised.”

Now, an investigation has been launched into the contractor Babcock for not raising the alarm on the bolts.

The Ministry of Offence said: “As part of a planned inspection a defect was found from work done when HMS Vanguard was in dry dock.

“It was promptly reported and fixed.

“In light of the issue, the Secretary of State spoke with the chief executive office of Babcock to seek assurances about future work.”
