Prince Harry ‘toning down his accent so it’s less aligned with Royal Family’
Prince Harry has been accused of “toning down” his accent so it sounds “more rounded and middle rather than upper class”
The Duke of Sussex, alongside his wife Meghan Markle, relocated to Montecito, California, after their dramatic royal exit in 2020.
Now living in an £11million nine-bedroom mansion, the Sussexes live a sheltered life in the US with their two children Archie, three, and one-year-old Lilibet.
And since leaving the UK, a speech and accent expert says Harry has adapted the way he talks.
Appearing in a video this week, he talked about mental resilience and how we have “greatness within us”.
Analysing the footage, founder of the London Speech Workshop Emma Serlin claimed the Duke’s accent changes show he is now more “of the people” than royal.
She explained: “Harry’s accent now sounds much more rounded and middle rather than upper class.
"In a classic Harry way, he’s doing what we know him to be – he’s the friendly prince, he’s charming, he connects with people. He is his mother’s son.
"He is now ‘of the people’ in a much more overt way. He has always toned the classic royal accent down and softened it, but previously he was much more aligned with the Royal Family.”
Ms Serlin was assessing footage from Harry’s video with mental health app start-up BetterUp.
It sees him carry out a series of interviews with Chloe Kim, an Olympic gold medal-winning snowboarder, psychologist Adam Grant and BetterUp member Blu Mendoza.
Ms Serlin, in her interview with the Mirror, said Harry “doesn’t sound any more American” despite the change in the way he speaks.
She added: “He does, however, sound as though he has taken the edge off the received pronunciation that was very much part of his previously somewhat ‘posh’ accent.
"There was one word – ‘critical’ – where he dropped the crisp ‘t’ and replaced it with a glottal stop [when you don’t fully make the ‘t’ sound].
“In short, there were only a few instances in this video where he started to sound Americanised.”
Earlier this week it emerged that Harry’s wife, Meghan, has been dubbed the “Princess of Montecito” by locals in California.
A report in Closer magazine reads: "Meghan just keeps it very private these days but her royal status gives her a lot of leverage.
"She spends most of her time in Montecito, but she heads into LA every week or so."
The Duchess reportedly enjoys daily hikes with their two dogs, Pula and Guy.
The report continues: “Meghan loves driving around LA to go to the same hiking trails that she used to visit back in the day, well off the beaten track.
"Often she’ll head off just herself and the dogs, which gives her time to reflect.”
