'Our ability as people to argue freely is increasingly under threat'

Winston Churchill’s grandson and former Conservative MP Sir Nicholas Soames has told GB News that cancel culture “is a serious worry in our national life”.

When asked by Alastair Stewart how he felt about people attacking statues of his grandfather, Sir Nicholas said: “Our ability as people to argue freely and to have good discourse, and good discussion, is increasingly under threat.”

Sir Nicholas said he thought it “was disgraceful” that a court found people innocent of criminal damage in relation to the Edward Colston statue in Bristol.

“You cannot alter the facts of history, and however disagreeable it may be, it’s proper that people should understand it and the context”, Sir Nicholas said.

Speaking about his grandfather Winston Churchill, Sir Nicholas told Alastair Stewart he did not object to people being rude about the former wartime Prime Minister, “they have every right to be, he was not perfect… he had views which would be uncongenial to us today, but that’s part of history.”

He added that he thought unsavoury factors about Winston Churchill don’t make much difference to the role played in WW2 “and what he did for this country."
