Justine Lindsay, 29, will be part of the Carolina Topcats squad for the 2022/2023 season

An NFL side has hired what is believed to be the league's first ever trans woman as part of its cheerleading squad.

Justine Lindsay, 29, will be part of the Carolina Topcats squad for the 2022/2023 season.

Justine shared her excitement about making the team while also coming out as transgender in an Instagram post.

As well as matches, Justine will present the Panthers at community events and fundraisers.

"Cats out [of] the bag, you are looking at the newest member of the Carolina Panthers Topcats Cheerleader's as the first transgender female.

"I would like to thank the beautiful and talented dancers who supported me along the way, alumni, Topcats family and friends for your love and support.

"I would not have gotten to this moment in my life if it wasn't for your support.

"This is a moment I will never forget and I cannot wait to show you what this girl has to bring."

Lindsay also said she was afraid of sharing her gender at first, with her best friend not even knowing.

But she now hopes to set an example and become a role model for others.

She also told Buzzfeed News: "'I think more people need to see this. It's not because I want recognition. It's to shed light on what's going on in this world."
