MPs gave the Nationality and Borders Bill a third reading by 298 votes to 231, majority 67, thereby allowing it to progress to the House of Lords.

The Government’s flagship immigration legislation has cleared the House of Commons amid chaotic scenes and claims of “anti-democratic” tactics from opposition MPs.

MPs gave the Nationality and Borders Bill a third reading by 298 votes to 231, majority 67, thereby allowing it to progress to the House of Lords.

The bill givea the government significant powers, including the ability to potentially strip someone's citizenship if they have one parent with a foreign passport.

The government has faced hostility, with former Tory cabinet minister David Davis saying plans to strip people of their British citizenship without warning are “uncivilised” and “legally disputable”.

David Davis wanted to amend the Nationality and Borders Bill to remove clause nine, arguing it could put at risk people who have lived in the UK for almost all of their life.

The Nationality and Borders Bill will “fail” without agreements between the UK and other countries to safely move migrants, Labour warned.

Shadow Home Office minister Bambos Charalambous told MPs: “It is deeply worrying that without reciprocal arrangements that this very Bill will actually fail because without those it will just encourage more dangerous crossings".

He called on MPs to support a Labour amendment to the Bill which would require the UK to co-operate with the EU on safe returns, adding: “The agreements that we had previously, such as Dublin III, gave people who are eligible a safe route here and it also allowed us to send people to the other safe countries when it was appropriate.

Despite his calls, the bill passed through the Commons with a 67 majority.

Boris Johnson said at PMQs last week that the Nationality and Borders Bill “gives us the power to make the distinction at last between illegal and legal migrants to this country, it gives… Border Force the power to turn people back at sea, and it gives us the power to screen people and send them for screening overseas rather than in this country”.
