Leilani Dowding has hit out at a transgender contestant who won a female beauty contest in America last week.

Brian Nguyen won “Miss Greater Derry 2023” in a competition run by the Miss America organisation.

The 19-year-old will now feature in the Miss New Hampshire contest, with the winner advancing to the Miss America competition.

Taking to Instagram after winning, Nguyen said: “In the 100 year history of Miss America, I have officially become the FIRST transgender titleholder within the Miss America Organisation.

“No words can describe the feeling of having the opportunity to serve my community and represent my community for the very first time at Miss New Hampshire.

“I am so honoured to be crowned your new Miss Greater Derry 2023, and I am thrilled to show you all what I have up my sleeves.”

GB News regular Leilani Dowding shared a video on her Twitter, criticising the judges’ decision to award Nguyen the title.

Dowding won Miss GB in 1998 and said “an entire world of opportunity opened” for her, adding that the same opportunity has now been stripped from biological girls who entered the competition.

"A biological male, an overweight one at that, has just won Miss Greater Derry in New Hampshire. Brian, not even a female name, caked in makeup, nothing like the pretty natural girls that entered the competition, has not only taken first place, they've taken away the chance for a female to have a scholarship and use that prize money for something towards her future."

"I don't know if they felt like they would be singled out, or whether they really are a woke bunch. But for goodness sake, for the sake of females going forward, we cannot allow this, they don't even realise the opportunity that has been stolen from them by a biological male and it's out of control."
