A chemical leak at a Leicester food manufacturer has forced many people to go to hospital.

The leak happened at around half past eight this morning at the Bradgate Bakery in the Beaumonst Leys district of Leicester.

According to LeicestershireLive East Midlands Ambulances as well as Leicestershire Fire and Police services were both deployed.

Specialist chemical support teams were also sent to ensure staff from Bradgate Bakery were safely escorted from the scene.

According to fire services 23 people had to be treated for gas inhalation at the scene - several of them were taken on to hospital.

"The small gas cloud caused by the leak has been safely dispersed, and there are no further chemical leaks", said a fire service spokesman.

"Crews are staying on the site to continue to monitor the situation.

"There are no hazards to local residents and all relevant partner agencies have been informed."
