A spokesperson from the Freedom Convoy in Canada has labelled Justin Trudeau’s clamping down on protesters “pathetic”.

Since late January, protesters in trucks and other vehicles have jammed the streets of the capital and obstructed border crossings, condemning vaccine mandates for truckers and other Covid-19 precautions and condemning Mr Trudeau’s Liberal government.

Benjamin Ditcher spoke exclusively to GB News presenter Alex Phillips about the mood within the movement.

“The sentiment is great. Nothing has changed on our end" he said.

“Justin Trudeau and his government seem to be doing everything they possible can to escalate the demonstration, I don’t know why.

“This is not what leadership is. It’s really quite pathetic at this point.

“He seems to have played his last card which is the Emergency Measures Act."

On Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked emergency powers to try to end the occupation around the country.

Government leaders have not indicated when or where the crackdowns on the self-styled Freedom Convoy will begin.

The government will be able to ban blockades at border crossings, airports and in Ottawa; freeze truckers’ personal and corporate bank accounts and suspend their licences; and target crowd-funding sites being used to support the blockades.

It also can force tow trucks to move the big rigs out of intersections and neighbourhoods. Up to now, some towing companies have been reluctant to co-operate because of their support for the truckers or fears of violence.

Ditcher continued: “We’re going to continue having our barbecues and our parties and our dancing and people on the stage talking about freedom.

“We’ll see how things go, for us nothing has really changed.

“They’re the ones who are panicking, it’s completely ludicrous to be honest.”

Ottawa’s police chief resigned on Tuesday after criticism of his department’s inaction against the trucker protests that have paralysed Canada’s capital for more than two weeks.
