'It would be ironic if it was Keir Starmer and Angela Rayner who had to resign over an illegal gathering'

It would be ironic wouldn’t it if it was Keir Starmer and Angela Rayner who had to resign over an illegal gathering.

You’d hate to see it wouldn’t you.

In a sensational u-turn Labour has now admitted Angela Rayner was with Keir Starmer at an event in Durham – the very same one where Sir Keir was filmed having a beer with colleagues in what looks suspiciously like a party.

Labour had denied this but now they’ve u-turned – saying Rayner was there and it was just 'an honest mistake' when they said she wasn’t!

An honest mistake! Well how can it be an honest mistake? Labour were asked directly whether or not Angela Rayner was there and they denied it – this looks a lot like a massive lie, doesn’t it?

And goodness, gracious me there’s more birthday cake!

Labour sources confirmed staff had presented Sir Keir with two birthday cakes in September 2020, when Covid guidance stated that people "should not hold or attend celebrations" where social distancing would be difficult.

Again, you hate to see it don’t you?

Perhaps Sir Keir will say he didn’t realise he was breaking the rules, if indeed he has. Perhaps it’s another honest mistake? He has been acting in good faith this whole time and that he genuinely didn’t recall any of these incidents.

But I find that hard to believe. Sir Keir said "we were working in the office, stopped for something to eat and then carried on working. No party, no breach."

But here are the receipts – the online event he was allegedly attending finished at 9.20pm, 45mins before he was filmed drinking beer with colleagues.

Perhaps now he and Angela Rayner have been exposed as petty point scoring politicians who have, actually, been the very things they’ve accused Boris Johnson of being – dishonest.

I had Labour MP John Spellar on yesterday who said this story was ‘just a smokescreen’ to distract from Boris Johnson breaking the rules he helped to create…

Another said "it’s an old story". A smokescreen? An old story? What absolute rubbish, a terrible attempt at spin. How can it be considered an old story when Labour have tried to drag party-gate out for months and months? How can it be a smokescreen when this is the new development?

But, I tell you what, at least Sir Keir can rely on his friends in the left-wing media to try to cover up this scandal.

We’re all equal before the law, no matter who created the law. If Keir Starmer and Angela Rayner are served with fixed penalty notices, will they practice what they preach and resign?
