Gen Z 'intolerant' after 45% of young people 'disagree' with views of others, finds report

A report by the think-tank More in Common has revealed that almost half of young people, born between 1997 and 2012, are threatened when other people disagree with their values.

The study found that one in three young people think that those who disagree with their political values must be factually wrong.

More in Common's report stated that a third of youngsters think different opinions on politics must be wrong.

The Democratic Repair report was established by More in Common to "reveal the good, the bad & the ugly about what Britons think about the state of our politics".

The group' Luke Tryl said to the Daily Mail: "Britain is the birthplace of parliamentary democracy and across the country Britons told us of their pride in that heritage".

"But as our report shows, that commitment to democracy in principle is being undermined in practice. Too many people feel our politics isn’t delivering for them and that they are looked down on by politicians and decision makers" said Luke Tryl.

Luke Tryl said "Tackling that and rebuilding trust must now be a priority".

The report was based on analysis of polls and focus groups involving 10,000 people between February 2020 and early this year.

More in Common's Luke Tryl tweeted: "Use schools as places to foster democratic commitment among young people & improve citizenship education. Gen Z support democracy but 1 in 3 Gen Zers believe that those with opposing political views are wrong about basic facts & 45% feel ‘scared' of the views of others".

Data from the Democratic Repair report revealed that "Britons are deeply frustrated with how our democracy currently works" said Luke Tryl.

The figures showed that 84% believe politicians don’t care what they think, 62% believe our democracy is rigged.

The data showed 76% feel looked down on by the Government, 74% by the Conservatives and 63% by Labour.
