Gary Neville has hit out against Prime Minister Boris Johnson, calling him a "proven liar" in a tweet.

The football pundit has been outspoken in his support for the Labour Party, hosting a fundraiser for party members in Manchester last week.


The former Manchester United defender announced in January that he had officially joined the Labour Party.

The gala dinner was held at the Grand Suite of the Vermillion restaurant and around 700 guests attended the fundraiser.

Sir Keir Starmer and deputy Labour leader Angela Rayner attended the the event and Neville joined Starmer on the stage.

Neville told Labour members "If Rishi Sunak was a footballer he’d be playing for Tottenham. He looks good but when the going gets tough he does one."

The former footballer tweeted his disapproval of the Conservative party leader at 10:44 am on March 29, posting an image of Mr Johnson with the caption "proven liar."

The broadcaster is set to make future appearances with Starmer after he showed support for the breakaway Super League proposal last year.

Premier League winning defender is reportedly considering running as Labour’s candidate for Greater Manchester mayor in 2024.

According to Shadow Culture Secretary Lucy Powell, the two have discussed the potential for the Manchester United legend to run on a number of occasions.

In a tweet, the MP said: “Very pleased @GNev2 has finally joined Labour. It’s something he and I have been discussing for a while. Personally think he’s more than capable of navigating (well, steaming) his way through the world of politics!”
