A 38-year-old former footballer was arrested on Sunday in Northern Ireland after a woman in her 20s was allegedly attacked in a bar

A former football star has been charged with sexual assault after a woman was allegedly attacked in a bar in Derry, Northern Ireland.

Police confirmed that the 38-year-old was arrested on Sunday, after a night out in a bar in where the alleged assault on a woman in her 20s took place.


The footballer has played for clubs in the UK and Ireland.

Officers said on Thursday: “Police have charged a 38-year-old male with sexual assault in the Derry / Londonderry area.

“He is due to appear before Londonderry Magistrates' Court on 23rd February.

“As is normal procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.”

It is understood that the woman did not know the football player and CCTV have from the pub is being investigated by police.

The Irish Sun approached the accused man for comment however he did not respond.

The law in Northern Ireland dictates that the maximum penalty for sexual assault and for causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent is ten years imprisonment.
