Alex Cole-Hamilton believes any attempt from Mr Trump to enter Scotland “could be seen as an attempt to flee” the US

A Scottish MP has called on the “unpleasant and divisive” Donald Trump to “stay away from Scotland” following the FBI's raid on his Mar-a-Lago estate.

The former US President said FBI agents raided his Florida home last Monday and broke into his safe in what his son acknowledged was part of an investigation into Mr Trump’s removal of official presidential records from the White House to his Florida resort.

Mr Trump owns Turnberry golf course in Scotland, with reports suggesting he could be set to visit in the coming weeks.

Though final details were not nailed down, local officials had been amplifying security measures in anticipation and local politicians were petitioning him not to come.

But speaking following the raid, Alex Cole-Hamilton, the leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats believes any attempt from Mr Trump to enter Scotland “could be seen as an attempt to flee” the US.

Drag row

Mr Cole-Hamilton told GB News: "Donald Trump was an unpleasant and divisive president who has spent years inventing webs of conspiracies.

"Given that he is currently being investigated by the FBI, any attempt to come to Scotland could be seen as an attempt to flee the country.

"I am confident that the overwhelming majority of people across the UK would rather he stayed away."

His comments come after Mr Trump claimed his three passports were “stolen” during last week’s raid.

In a post on his Truth Social, Mr Trump said: "Wow. In the raid by the FBI of Mar-a-Lago, they stole my three Passports (one expired), along with everything else.

"This is an assault on a political opponent at a level never seen before in our country. Third world."

Since his claims, a Department of Justice official has told NBC News that the former US President’s passports had been returned to him.
