A further 119,789 lab-confirmed Covid-19 cases have been recorded in the UK as of 9am on Thursday, the Government said, a new record for daily reported cases.
The Government said a further 147 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19.
Separate figures published by the Office for National Statistics show there have now been 173,000 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.
The UK has now broken its record for daily cases set yesterday, when more than 106,000 people received a positive test result.
A record 464,667 people tested positive for Covid-19 in England at least once in the week to December 15, up 47% on the previous week, according to the latest Test and Trace figures.
This is the highest number to test positive in a single week since the Test and Trace scheme began in May 2020.
A total of 51,617,091 first doses of Covid-19 vaccine had been delivered in the UK by December 22, Government figures show. This is a rise of 39,309 on the previous day.
Some 47,210,053 second doses have been delivered, an increase of 53,154.
A combined total of 31,684,926 booster and third doses have also been given, a day-on-day rise of 840,038.
Separate totals for booster and third doses are not available.
Case rates in England are rising in every age group except five to nine-year-olds, the UK Health Security Agency has said.
The highest rate is among 20 to 29-year-olds, with 1,741.0 cases per 100,000 people in the seven days to December 19, up sharply week-on-week from 656.4.
The second highest rate is among 30 to 39-year-olds, up from 763.8 to 1,496.8.
The lowest rate is among people aged 80 and over at 112.7, up from 73.4.
Among five to nine-year-olds rates fell from 1,057.3 in the week to December 12 to 929.2 in the seven days to December 19.
