The UK have recorded 106,122 positive Covid cases today - the first time over 100,000 people received a positive test result in a single day since the pandemic began.

As Omicron surges, the UK's national leaders have imposed varying levels of restrictions in the run-up to Christmas.


But how many cases have been recorded in each nation?

Wales bring back rule of six from Boxing Day, amid rapidly rising numbers

Following Mark Drakeford's announcement that Wales will be re-introducing Covid measures from Boxing Day, 4,662 cases have been recorded in the country today.

Pandemic measures being brought back include the two-metre social distancing rules in workplaces, the rule of six in hospitality, cinemas and theatres, and limits to sporting attendances.

England records soaring positive test results

The majority of the 106,122 positive Covid cases have been recorded in England.

95,795 positive cases have been recorded in England today.

This comes as Boris Johnson announced yesterday that no new measures will be brought in before Christmas.

How many cases have been recorded today in Scotland?

In Scotland 2,434 positive results have been recorded today.

Nicola Sturgeon yesterday announced a range of new measures to curb the spread of Omicron, which is now the dominant strain in Scotland, to come in after Christmas.

These include making sporting events 'effectively spectator-free', re-introducing 1 metre social distancing in hospitality and table service for alcohol vendors.

What about Northern Ireland?

3,231 positive cases have been recorded in Northern Ireland today.

Current advice is that indoor gatherings should have no more than 30 people present, while working from home is also recommended.

A scheme that requires people to prove Covid-free status to gain entry to a range of hospitality venues and large-attendance events will be made mandatory.
