The Prime Minister's spokesman has responded to criticism of the Government for failing to regulate 'cowboy' testing companies who are working the system overcharge holidaymakers.
Boris Johnson's spokesperson said "There are many tests available, both PCR and [lateral flow], within the £20-50 price range. We will continue to monitor the actions that the companies are taking."
"It is clearly unacceptable for any product testing company to take advantage of holidaymakers. The average price of a day two test is now under £45. We will strike companies off the list if they are found to be seeking to exploit the public when they need these tests", said the spokesperson.
From Tuesday all travellers arriving in England are now be required to take a Covid-19 pre-departure test in an attempt to limit the spread of the Omicron variant.
The Government has pledged to strike off firms found to be exploiting passengers however ministers highlighted yesterday that some firms were offering 30p tests via the Government's official website Gov.UK.
The 'cowboy' firms are causing their tests to appear top of search results on the site when sorted by price, although travellers who click through to the firm's websites will still pay £80 for the tests.
This comes after Boris Johnson has denied a scientist’s allegation that introducing travel restrictions to slow the spread of Omicron is like “shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted”.
The Prime Minister insisted the UK was the first country to take “decisive measures” in relation to the new strain.
A requirement for people entering the UK to self-isolate until they receive a negative result from a post-arrival PCR test – even if they are fully vaccinated – was introduced last week.
Professor Mark Woolhouse, who is a member of the Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Modelling (SPI-M) which advises the Government, said the Omicron variant is already “spreading pretty rapidly” and the new travel measures “may be a case of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted”.
On a visit to Merseyside on Monday, Mr Johnson told reporters: “What we’re doing is responding to the pandemic.
“We were the first country in the world to take decisive measures to tackle Omicron. We put about 10 countries automatically, immediately, on to the red list and we said that anybody coming from any country in the world would have to quarantine for a couple of days.
“We’re now going further and toughening those measures up as we see the spread of Omicron around the world.”
The Prime Minister added that the Government does not believe it needs to change the “overall guidance and advice we’re giving about Omicron in this country”.
He added: “We’re still waiting to see exactly how dangerous it is, what sort of effect it has in terms of deaths and hospitalisations.”
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said he “would have liked to see the Government act more quickly”, and claimed “they are behind the curve”.
He added: “As soon as we saw the scientific evidence saying that (there) should be pre-departure tests, we called on the Government to do this last week.
“The Government delayed, as they always do.
“They’ve done it now, that’s a good thing, but the Government needs to get ahead instead of being behind.”
Sir Keir also urged the Government to do “whatever it can” to lower the price of tests as “lots of people… (are) getting really hammered by prices that can’t be justified”.
There have been repeated complaints that many test providers listed on the Government’s website advertise misleading prices.
The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “We will continue to monitor the actions that the companies are taking.
“It’s clearly unacceptable for any private testing company to take advantage of holidaymakers, and the average price of a day-two test is now under £45.”
