Born Heru Purwanto, Tito featured on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao v Brandon Rios 2013 fight.

Boxing star Hero Tito has died aged 35 after being knocked out in the ring during a lightweight title fight.

Born Heru Purwanto, Tito won 29 of 48 fights with 17 defeats and two draws.


On February 27 2022, Tito fought James Mokoginta for the Indonesian lightweight title.

Mokoginta hit him with a right uppercut in the seventh round and despite trying to stay on his feet, Tito fell to the ground and lost consciousness.

He was rushed to hospital but doctors were not able to save his life, after spending a week in a coma, he passed away on 7 March.

Tito leaves behind a wife and two daughters.

Tributes to the boxing star poured in, with members of the community taking to Twitter to share their support.

American professional boxer Freddie Roach posted an image of the boxer and said “Indonesian boxer Hero Tito died after several days of being in a coma due to injuries suffered in a fight last Sunday in Jakarta.

“Tito, whose real name is Heru Purwanto, was 35 yrs old. Rest In Peace, Hero. Condolences to the family and all those affected by his tragic passing.”

Lennox Lewis said: “Every time a fighter steps in the ring, they do so knowing it could be their last time.

“The boxing fraternity has lost another member. Rest in love Hero “The Lion” Tito”

Fans also shared their grief online with one posting: “Once again, boxing is in mourning as the Indian boxer Hero Tito died”
