The Zoo in Antwerp said Hermien and Imani were not in danger.

Two hippos at Antwerp Zoo have tested positive for Covid-19, Belgian media reported on Friday.

The two hippos, Hermien and Imani, were are not in danger says the zoo, vets reported the animals were "expelling snot" and had runny noses which prompted further investigation.

Amid the Covid-19 outbreak in Europe this is believed to be the first time hippos have tested positive for coronavirus.

Zoo employees who worked with the hippos tested negative and are disinfecting safety clothing and putting on safety goggles before coming into contact with the infected animals.

The hippo's enclosure will reopen once the animals test negative for Covid-19.
