Electronics experts have issued a clear warning to households setting up their new Amazon Echo gadgets after Christmas Day.

Known by the name of their AI assistant Alexa, the voice-activated pieces of equipment provide owners with a range of features such as music, news and weather updates.

Amid warnings over conversations being recorded, users are urged to not put the item in their bedrooms.

Dr Hannah Fry, a mathematician and expert on tech company algorithms at University College London, said the gadget should not be kept in private spaces.

She told the Liverpool Echo: “I think there are spaces in your home, like the bedroom and bathroom, which should remain completely private.

“This technology is activated by a trigger word but it keeps recording for a short period afterwards.

“People accept that, but we should all spend more time thinking about what it means for us.”

Amazon have confirmed the device sometimes records conversations.
Amazon have confirmed the device sometimes records conversations.

The expert said that she had sent requests to major technology companies for her data, which revealed content of some conversations within her home.

Amazon have confirmed that staff sometimes listen to customer conversations via Alexa, saying that recordings are used in research in order to develop the device’s understanding of human speech.

User feedback has resulted in a method of switching off some of the recording features on your device.

By opening the Alexa app on your smartphone, you can find a way to switch it off.

You will then select “Manage Your Alexa Data”, before pressing “How Long to Save Records”, before selecting confirm on “Don’t Save Recordings”.

You can then scroll down to Help Improve Alexa, then switch the Use of Voice Recordings to off.

On some devices, doing this may result in a message telling you that the feature being switched off will mean “new features may not work well for you”.
