Bills have not been kept down, competition has been destroyed, and many energy suppliers have been declared bankrupt

We are facing an existential energy crisis this winter - in fact, it’s an energy catastrophe - because we let the middle-class leftie remoaner lunatics who dominate British politics enact their virtue signalling plans without a hint of considering the dire consequences.

Like the disastrous Liberal Democrat deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg who boasted of his decision to reject nuclear power - both safe and environmentally friendly - because it wouldn’t be available until, er, exactly when we needed it.

Then there’s the party’s current leader Ed Davey who, as energy secretary in the Cameron/Clegg coalition, banned fracking - and claims to be proud of leaving us in this mess.

He should hang his head in shame.

And don’t forget Theresa May, whose 2017 decision to cap energy prices - a policy ripped off straight from Labour’s disastrous former socialist leader Ed Milliband - has failed spectacularly.

Bills have not been kept down, competition has been destroyed, and many energy suppliers have been declared bankrupt.

So that worked out. Not!

Then there’s May’s decision to damn us to Net Zero by 2050, a last-minute move made in the month before she was booted from Number 10, nodded through with hardly any debate given the life changing nature of the policy.

As the Daily Telegraph’s Associate Editor Camilla Tominey wrote at the weekend: “The rush to decarbonise the economy, with no plan for how to achieve that over such a short period of time, threatens to become one of the most expensive mistakes in recent British history.”

And if you think things are bad now, just wait till the green extremists enact more of their plan.

I’m an environmentalist, but the continued march to Net Zero in the midst of an energy catastrophe, created, in part, by an unprecedented two year shut down of the global economy and an unexpected European war, cutting us off from Russian gas, is unhinged.

It will see us lose control of our own resources, with ordinary Brits forced to live smaller and smaller lives, where the elites exert full control.

We’ll be eating insects and banned from travel, while they continue to down beef carpaccio on private jets.

Like Prince Harry, the world’s biggest eco hypocrite who took a private jet 1,000 miles from his Californian home - and transported his kit in a separate car.

Before the usual suspects try and blame Brexit, just look to Germany, which is introducing a raft of draconian measures from September the 1st to try and cut the country’s energy output by a whopping 20 per cent to avoid blackouts thanks to a reliance on Russian gas.

As Tory peer Lord Daniel Moylan rightly analysed: "This is for those suggesting the energy shortages are caused by a Brexit and the Conservatives."

The next Prime Minister is going to have to reverse the damage and decline started by Clegg’s Lib Dem coalition and picked up by Theresa May so the UK is never reliant on bad actors for our energy again.
